Starting a business involves more than having a great idea. Taking the right steps from the beginning can help you build a strong foundation and avoid unnecessary delays.

CHOOSE YOUR BUSINESS IDEA AND PLAN

Clearly define the product or service you will offer, the people you plan to serve, and how your business will earn income. A written business plan can help organize your goals, startup costs, pricing, marketing strategy, and financial projections.

SELECT A BUSINESS STRUCTURE

Decide whether your business will operate as a sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company, corporation, or another structure. Your selection can affect taxes, ownership, liability, and registration requirements. Consider speaking with a qualified legal or tax professional before making this decision.

CHOOSE AND RESEARCH YOUR BUSINESS NAME

Select a name that reflects your brand and check whether a similar business name is already registered in Georgia. A business search can help identify existing names, but it does not guarantee that a name is legally available or protected.

REGISTER YOUR BUSINESS

If you are forming an LLC, corporation, limited partnership, or another registered entity, file the appropriate formation documents with the Georgia Secretary of State. Depending on your business structure and location, you may also need to register a trade name, sometimes called a DBA, with the appropriate county.

OBTAIN AN EIN

Apply for an Employer Identification Number through the IRS when required. An EIN may be needed to hire employees, open a business bank account, file certain tax returns, or operate particular business structures.

REGISTER FOR TAX ACCOUNTS

Determine which federal, state, and local taxes apply to your business. Georgia businesses may need to register through the Georgia Tax Center for sales and use tax, withholding tax, or other business-related tax accounts.

APPLY FOR LICENSES AND PERMITS

Check with your city, county, and applicable state agencies to determine which occupational tax certificates, business licenses, professional licenses, zoning approvals, or specialized permits are required. Requirements vary based on your location and the type of business you operate.

OPEN A BUSINESS BANK ACCOUNT

Keep business and personal funds separate by opening a dedicated business bank account. The bank may request your formation documents, EIN confirmation, ownership information, and business license.

SET UP YOUR BUSINESS RECORDS

Create a system for tracking income, expenses, receipts, contracts, tax documents, licenses, and filing deadlines. Proper records can support accurate tax filings and help you make informed business decisions.

MAINTAIN YOUR BUSINESS

Keep licenses and permits current, file required tax returns, and complete Georgia annual registration requirements when applicable. Update the appropriate agencies whenever important business information changes.
